Choosing a Juicer

What To Look For In A Juicer

There are numerous juicers on the market that suit all kinds of budget. However, price should be one of the last factors to consider. The cheapest electrical juicers tend to have low power motors that burn out just after the 12 month warranty is up, make the most hideous racket and are a pain to clean. In order to choose a juicer, there are much more important considerations.

These are:

1) EASE OF USE
- This is by far the most important requirement of a juicer. The easier a juicer is to use and clean, the more often you'll use it. If you dread using your juicer the rest of the criteria listed below don't mean a thing.

2) JUICE YIELD -
The amount of juice extracted from the fruit or vegetable. It is important that you get as much juice as possible from your fruits and vegetables. An efficient juicer can get as much as 40% more juice than an average juicer. Pulp ejector juicers yield about 1/3 less juice than juicers that keep the pulp in the basket. That's equivalent to losing one in three glasses of juice....Over the course of a year that can really add up!

3) TYPE
- There are several types of juicer available:-

* Centrifugal Juicer- Centrifugal juicers introduce oxygen into the juice, creating oxidation. Oxidation degrades nutrients, not immediately, but over time. To maximize the nutrients of the juice, we recommend you drink the juice as soon as you make it.

* Low Speed Masticating Juicer - Low speed masticating juicers produce a higher quality juice because they don't produce as much oxidation.

* High Speed Masticating Juicer- High speed masticating juicers can be problematic if heat is generated. Heat will destroy nutrients on contact, unlike oxidation which occurs over time.

* Hydraulic Press Juicers - Hydraulic Press juicers produce very little oxidation, and therefore produce the highest nutrient juice.

3) JUICE QUALITY
- Different methods of juice extraction produce varying quality juice in
terms of nutrients,pulp and foaming.

4) RELIABILITY
- A good juicer is built to last. They are usually guaranteed with warranties of between 5 to 10 years. Inexpensive juicers tend to lack reliability, and are typically warranted for 1 year. Most inexpensive juicers are not built for daily use. The cutting blade usually wears out after 2 to 4 months, and the motor burns out just after your warranty expires.

5) POWER
- A powerful motor in your juicer will allow you to juice harder and produce juice quicker without straining the motor. Power is the wattage, not RPMs. RPM measures the speed of rotation. The higher the RPM, the faster the nutrient content from the produce is destroyed by oxidation. A motor rating of 350watts or greater is recommended.

6) REPLACEMENT PARTS
- Finding replacement parts for cheaper juicers can be troublesome at best. Getting replacement parts from some manufacturers (if any are available) can take weeks. Once you get into juicing every day, even a week is too long to go without your juicer.
